Mesa Verde Gardens (MVG) is a targeted response to rising food insecurity and diet-linked chronic diseases primarily affecting low-income families in South Santa Cruz County. We work with community members—primarily farm workers and their families—to increase self-reliance and food security by co-creating community gardens where they can grow organic produce for their own tables. To accomplish its work, MVG partners with public officials and public agencies, clergy and churches, and other individuals to secure land on which interested community members who lack a place to grow their own food may do so. Through its efforts, MVG also aims to promote community by cultivating safe, verdant, beautiful spaces in which community members can gather to work, learn, grow, celebrate and otherwise enrich their own lives and enhance collective well-being.
